How much do Etsy, Shopify, and Amazon sellers make?

The Results Are In...

Recently, many of you filled out a short survey about your business. Thank you for participating! If you're curious about how your results compare with other sellers, here's a peek behind the curtain.

I received the most responses from Etsy sellers, followed by Amazon, and then Shopify.

Each platform had a few standout sellers earning well above the rest, but for the averages below, I’ve removed those outliers to give a more realistic view of where the typical small business owner stands. This data also reflects my readership, which leans toward smaller-scale and newer sellers.

Average Gross Revenue (2024)

  • Etsy: $44,00
  • Shopify: $42,000
  • Amazon: $140,000

Average Expenses

  • Etsy: $27,000
  • Shopify: $23,000
  • Amazon: $88,000

That works out to average net profit margins of:

  • Etsy: 38%
  • Shopify: 45%
  • Amazon: 37%

These profit percentages are based on self-reported revenue ranges and expense estimates, so they may be a bit inflated or incomplete. But they still offer helpful ballpark figures.

Pro tip: The higher your net profit margin (net income/gross revenue), the better! That means you keep more of every dollar you earn. So calculate your net profit margin, and make it a goal to increase it!

Selling on Multiple Platforms

  • ~50% of Etsy sellers also sell elsewhere
  • 85% of Shopify sellers branch out to other platforms
  • ~50% of Amazon sellers do the same

This aligns with what I see in the field—Shopify users especially tend to run multi-channel operations.

Lower Revenue Is More Common on Etsy and Shopify

  • 65% of Etsy sellers earned $50k or less
  • 57% of Shopify sellers fell into that same range
  • Only 36% of Amazon sellers earned under $50k

Meanwhile, 45% of Amazon sellers reported grossing over $200k, which reflects how Amazon rewards high-volume operations. With thinner margins and steep fees, success often comes down to scale.

Growth Takes Time

If you're an Etsy seller in that <$50k group, don’t be discouraged! 75% of you have been on the platform for just two years or less. Growth in e-commerce takes time, learning, and consistency.

Compare that to Etsy’s top performers:

  • 85% of high-earning Etsy sellers have been selling for 6+ years
  • On Amazon, 50% of top earners also had 6+ years of experience

Curious What Else Top Etsy Sellers Have in Common?

In the next issue of Your Etsy Edge, I’ll share a snapshot of the most common traits among Etsy’s highest earners, including how long they’ve been selling, how much time they put into their shop each week, and whether or not they use Etsy Ads or email marketing.

It’s a quick, practical look at what sets top sellers apart, and it might give you a few ideas to apply to your own shop.

Your Etsy Edge keeps you in the loop on Etsy changes and helps you build a stronger, more profitable business. Don’t miss it!

On a Personal Note

It seems counterintuitive, but I actually get more reading done in the summer compared to the winter.

My husband and I love to sit on the porch on summer evenings after dinner. I head outside as soon as possible with a book in hand to enjoy the outdoors, but in the winter, I tend to hop on the computer after dinner. Not nearly as relaxing or enjoyable!

Hi Reader, It’s a well-established fact that I’m a bit of a nerd. 🤓 I mean, for heaven’s sake, last night I had a dream that an evil entity was pressuring me to record accounting numbers incorrectly, and it turned into a life-or-death situation involving deadly biting squirrels.
